National Week without Violence Events October 14-20, 2007


Join multiply local agencies in support of National Week without Violence and Domestic Violence Awareness Month by participating in various activities in the Topeka community beginning Sunday, October 14th through Saturday October 20th, 2007.

Reflect on Violence Vigil
Sunday, October 14, evening
Lake Shawnee

Please join us as we honor the courage of domestic violence survivors. No cameras or recording devices will be allowed until after the vigil.

Night Out Against Crime
Monday, October 15, evening
Holton Square

This event will follow up last year’s successful Night Out against Crime in Holton. Please join us for hot dogs, kid’s activities and information on community resources.  Awards for the Jackson County winners of the Week Without Violence art contest will be given at this event.

Chalk at the Capitol

Tuesday, October 16, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Kansas Capitol Building, South side (on 10th Street)

Kids and families are invited to enjoy free snacks, games, face-painting and family fun. Awards for the Shawnee County winners of the Week Without Violence art contest will be given at this event.

YWCA Week Without Violence March and Rally

Wednesday, October 17, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Join us at noon at Bracken Park (across from the YWCA) but feel free to come earlier if you would like to make your own sign (materials provided). We will march down Topeka Blvd. to the Heritage Hall where we will enjoy a free hot dog lunch, speakers and performers.

Talking to Teens about Dating Violence: a workshop for parents and youth workers

Tuesday, October 16, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Marvin Aduitorium

Research shows that relationship violence often begins in high school and middle school. Learn how to recognize warning signs of unhealthy relationships, how to talk about violence with teens and about community resources. Facilitators will include staff from the YWCA Battered Women Task Force, Shawnee County District Attorney's Office and other local experts on youth.

Voices against Violence Concert

Saturday, October 20, afternoon-evening

Hear local bands and spoken word artists united to end violence.
